Level 2 sleep study

Home Sleep Testing

A Level 2 sleep study records the same core signals as a hospital study, but you sleep at home in your own bed. It is the most common way to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea and other sleep-related breathing problems.

Overview

During a Level 2 study, small sensors record your brain activity, breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, leg movements and sleep position through the night. Everything is fitted at the clinic, so all you need to do is go home and sleep as normally as you can.

The recording is scored by a sleep scientist and reported by a sleep physician. Results go back to your referring doctor, who will talk you through them and any treatment options.

Who it’s for

  • Loud snoring, or pauses in breathing noticed by a partner
  • Waking unrefreshed or feeling sleepy during the day
  • Morning headaches, a dry mouth or waking up gasping
  • High blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes alongside poor sleep
  • Checking how well treatment such as an oral appliance is working

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is needed for a diagnostic sleep study. [Confirm Medicare eligibility requirements.]

What if I don’t sleep well that night?

Most people sleep well enough to give a useful result. If the recording is not long enough to report, we will arrange a repeat study.

What if a sensor comes off?

The sensors are secured to stay on overnight. We show you how to check and reattach the key sensors if needed.

Is a home study as accurate as a hospital study?

For most adults with suspected sleep apnoea, a Level 2 study gives a reliable diagnosis. Your doctor may recommend an in-lab study for more complex cases.
