What does bulk billed mean?
Bulk billing means we claim the Medicare benefit directly, so you pay nothing for that service. To bulk bill, you need a valid Medicare card and the service has to meet Medicare's rules, which usually means having a valid referral.
Who is eligible for a bulk-billed home sleep study?
Medicare covers a diagnostic home sleep study for adults when one of these applies:
- Your GP refers you directly after completing screening questionnaires with you. You need an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 8 or more and one of:
- a STOP-Bang score of 3 or more
- an OSA50 score of 5 or more
- a high-risk result on the Berlin questionnaire
- A sleep or respiratory specialist has assessed you and decided you need a sleep study.
Medicare also limits how often these studies can be claimed. If you've had a sleep study in the last 12 months, please tell us when you book.
Not eligible? You can still have a sleep study. Your options may include seeing a specialist first or paying for the study yourself. We'll explain the cost [private fee to be confirmed] before you decide.
GPs can find the screening questionnaires and our referral form on our page for doctors.
What to bring to your appointment
- your Medicare card (and DVA card, if you have one)
- your referral, unless your doctor has sent it to us directly
- a list of your current medicines
- for CPAP appointments: your machine, mask, tubing and power cord
CPAP equipment costs
Medicare doesn't cover CPAP machines, masks or supplies. Things that may help with the cost:
- Private health insurance: some extras policies pay a rebate on CPAP machines. Rules and waiting periods vary, so check with your fund before you buy.
- Government programs: some people may be eligible for equipment through programs such as EnableNSW or the Department of Veterans' Affairs. Ask your doctor whether you qualify.
- Trial before buying: [Clinic to confirm CPAP trial and hire options and costs.]
We'll give you a written quote before any purchase.
Payment
Where a fee applies, we accept [EFTPOS, credit card. Clinic to confirm]. Payment is due on the day of your appointment or purchase.

Fees FAQs
Will I have to pay anything for a bulk-billed test?
No. If your test is bulk billed, there's no out-of-pocket cost. If anything means a fee would apply, we'll tell you before your appointment.
How long is a referral valid?
It depends on the type of referral. Bring the original or have your doctor send it to us, and we'll check it when you book.
Can I claim CPAP on my private health insurance?
Some extras policies include CPAP machines, but cover differs between funds and policies. Ask your fund what you're covered for and whether you need anything from us, such as an itemised receipt or a letter from your doctor.
I don't have a Medicare card. Can I still be seen?
Yes, but a fee will apply. Call us for a quote. Overseas visitors may be able to claim on their travel or overseas student health insurance.
Not sure what you're eligible for?
Call us and we'll talk you through it, including referrals and any costs, before you book.
