Frequently asked questions

Plain-English answers to the questions we hear most. Can't find what you need? Call us on (02) 9564 8626.

Booking & referrals

Do I need a referral?

For bulk-billed testing (home sleep tests and lung function tests), yes, from your GP or specialist. You don't need a referral for CPAP equipment, mask fittings or CPAP troubleshooting.

How do I book?

Call us on (02) 9564 8626, Monday to Friday 9am–5pm, or send a booking request online and we'll call you back within one business day.

Can my doctor send the referral straight to you?

Yes. Doctors can send referrals to us directly. See our information for doctors.

How do I change or cancel an appointment?

Call us as early as you can. See our booking & cancellation policy.

Fees & Medicare

Is the home sleep test really bulk billed?

Yes, if you have a valid referral and meet Medicare's criteria. Your GP checks this using short questionnaires. If you don't meet the criteria, we'll explain your options and any cost before you book. See the criteria.

Will I have to pay anything for a bulk-billed service?

Not for bulk-billed services. If a fee applies to anything, we'll tell you before your appointment.

Does Medicare cover CPAP machines?

No. Some private health extras policies pay a rebate, and some people may be eligible for government-funded equipment. More on CPAP costs.

I don't have a Medicare card. Can I still be seen?

Yes, but a fee will apply. Call us for a quote.

Home sleep test

What happens during a home sleep test?

We fit a small recording device at our Kogarah clinic, you sleep at home as usual, and you bring the equipment back the next morning. Step-by-step guide.

Will I be able to sleep with the sensors on?

Most people sleep well enough for a useful recording, even if it doesn't feel like their best night.

How soon will I get my results?

Results go to your referring doctor, usually within [X working days, clinic to confirm]. Book a follow-up with your GP to discuss them.

Is a home test as good as a sleep lab?

For many adults with suspected obstructive sleep apnoea, a home study is enough to make a diagnosis. People with complex medical conditions, or other suspected sleep disorders, may need a lab study instead.

CPAP

Can you help with a CPAP machine I bought elsewhere?

Yes. Bring your machine, mask, tubing and power cord, and we'll check your setup and mask fit.

How long does it take to get used to CPAP?

Anywhere from a few nights to several weeks. Early problems are common and usually fixable, so get in touch rather than giving up.

How often should I replace my mask?

It depends on the mask. Cushions usually need replacing more often than frames or headgear. Follow the manufacturer's schedule, and replace parts sooner if they leak or look worn.

Can I try a mask before I buy it?

Yes. Book a mask fitting and try different styles in person.

Lung function testing & asthma

Does a lung function test hurt?

No. There are no needles. Some breathing tests take effort and might make you cough or feel briefly light-headed.

Should I take my puffers before a lung function test?

Follow the instructions you're given when you book. Some puffers need to be stopped beforehand, but never stop a medicine unless you've been told to.

What happens in an asthma education session?

We check your inhaler and spacer technique, go through your asthma action plan and talk about your triggers. More about asthma education.
